Your system may be capped at a limit that no longer exists

For years, a system larger than 5kW had to throttle its export so it never pushed more than 5kW to the network, even on a perfect summer day. That generation was simply lost.

From 11 May 2026 the default export limit rose to 10kW across every New Zealand lines company, and distributors now have to justify anything lower on safety or reliability grounds. Some also offer dynamic limits that flex above and below the default.

You may be able to benefit if:

• Your system was installed before 2025
• Your inverter is 5kW or larger and is export-limited in its settings
• You have roof space for more panels
• You have been thinking about a battery
• You have added an EV, a heat pump or a hot water heat pump since installing

• Check your current export limit. Often it is a settings change plus a new application rather than new hardware.
• Apply to your lines company to have the limit lifted.
• Add panels to your existing array where the inverter has capacity.
• Add a battery, which is often the better move if your roof is already full.
• Assess your inverter. Older inverters may not support what you want, and we will tell you honestly if an upgrade is not worth it.
