5kW solar systems
A 5kW solar system costs from $9,990 installed in New Zealand, uses around 12 panels and generates roughly 6,750 kWh a year in Auckland conditions. It suits smaller households with lower consumption, and typically saves around $1,400 a year.
Who this suits
- One to two people
- A smaller home, or a townhouse
- Monthly power bill under about $250
- No EV, and no plans for one
- Limited roof space, since a 5kW array needs roughly 22 to 25 square metres
When to size up instead
Be honest with yourself about the next five years. If any of these apply, go to 6.6kW: you are likely to get an EV, you are adding a heat pump or hot water heat pump, you plan to add a battery, or your household is likely to grow.
The cost gap between 5kW and 6.6kW is around $2,000, but adding panels later means a second install with fresh scaffolding and labour, which usually costs more than the difference. Sizing up at the outset is almost always cheaper than upgrading later.
