Solar for rural properties and lifestyle blocks

Rural and lifestyle properties are among the best candidates for solar in New Zealand. They typically have higher consumption from pumps, sheds and workshops, more usable roof area across multiple buildings, higher exposure to outages, and often the space for a ground-mounted array where the roof does not suit.

Why the economics are better out here

You use more

Water pumps, effluent systems, workshops, milking sheds, freezers, tank pumps. Higher consumption means more of your generation is used directly rather than exported at a low buy-back rate, which is what shortens payback.

You have more roof

A house plus a shed or implement barn is far more usable array area than a suburban roof. Shed roofs are often large, simple, unshaded and structurally straightforward, which is close to ideal.

You lose power more often

Rural feeders are long and exposed. Some of the longest in the country run through Northland and the Far North. That makes battery backup meaningfully more valuable than it is in town.

You may have land for ground-mount

Where roof aspect or shading is poor, a ground-mounted array on a spare corner is often the better answer. Not many residential installers offer it.

What we do differently on rural jobs

  • Assess all available roof structures, not just the house
  • Size to your actual load including pumps and sheds, which is where a standard residential quote goes wrong
  • Consider ground-mount where it beats the roof
  • Specify for outage backup where the network justifies it
  • Account for longer travel and access in the quote honestly, rather than adding it later

Where we work

Lifestyle blocks and rural properties across the regions we serve. Access and travel distance affect cost, and we will tell you honestly at quote stage rather than after.

Rural solar questions

Often yes, and it usually gives the better result. We assess both.
