A 6.6kW solar system costs from $11,990 installed in New Zealand, uses around 15 panels and generates roughly 8,900 kWh a year in Auckland conditions. It is the most commonly installed residential size in the country and typically saves around $1,900 a year.

Why it became the standard

6.6kW is not an arbitrary number. Under the old 5kW export cap, installers paired a slightly larger panel array with a 5kW inverter, because panels rarely produce their full rated output and the oversizing captured more energy across the day without breaching the limit. 6.6kW was the sweet spot.

That constraint is gone. The export limit doubled to 10kW in May 2026. 6.6kW is still an excellent size for a typical household, but it is now a choice rather than a ceiling, and larger systems are worth genuinely considering.

When to size up

Go to 10kW if you have an EV or plan to, you run heat pumps and a heat pump hot water cylinder, you have a larger home, or you want a battery. EV charging alone can add 2,000 to 3,000 kWh a year to your consumption, which changes the answer.

When to size down

Go to 5kW if you are one or two people, your bill is under $250 a month, or your usable roof area is limited.
